GPA calculation, explained

How is semester GPA calculated?

Each grade converts to grade points on the 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, and so on). Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours to get quality points, add them up, then divide by total GPA credit hours.

How does the cumulative GPA update work?

We convert your prior cumulative GPA back into quality points (GPA × completed credits), add this semester's quality points and credits, then divide the combined totals.

Do Pass/Fail courses affect my GPA?

At most schools, Pass/Fail (P/NP) courses earn credit but carry no grade points, so they're excluded from the GPA math. GradePoint counts them toward total credits only.
